Following a comprehensive borough-wide programme of tennis court refurbishment works, Havant Borough Council have appointed the National Tennis Association (NTA) to manage all council-owned parks tennis facilities across the borough.
The comprehensive refurbishments were made possible following grant funding from the Lawn Tennis Association and UK Government of £218,000, as well as £12,000 of Community Infrastructure Levy contributions from Havant Borough Council. The works – which started in April this year -included court resurfacing, new access technology, nets, posts and colour coating comprising green courts and blue surrounds.
Works on tennis courts at Purbrook Heath, Waterlooville Recreation Ground and Havant Park are now complete. Tennis courts at Cowplain Recreation Ground - the final site earmarked for refurbishment – will be complete in July.
To ensure courts are sustainable and are utilised to their maximum, Havant Borough Council have appointed the NTA to manage and maintain all tennis sites across the borough, including those sites recently refurbished. A new, affordable, paid for model will be implemented at all sites, ensuring the long-term playable condition of courts, and offering a sustainable approach to their on-going maintenance and refurbishment.
Residents will be able to use Clubspark – an online booking system - to book and pay for sessions on court. Additionally, through Clubspark residents can access tennis coaching sessions (for all ages and abilities), and secure household membership for just £37 a year. Household membership allows unlimited tennis court access to all sites across the borough for everyone at the registered address.
Councillor Gwen Robinson (Deputy Leader and Cabinet Lead for Communities and Housing) said “Through canny investment in improving tennis courts across the borough the council – in partnership with the National Tennis Association – has provided a long-term, sustainable solution to providing top-tier tennis facilities for residents. The health benefits of tennis are obvious – as is the fun that be had in keeping fit and active on the courts! I’m impressed to not only see our borough’s tennis facilities so fundamentally improved but delighted to know they’ll be managed to the highest standard for residents going forward.”
