Havant Borough Council invites residents to remember the victims of the Holocaust during a non-denominational commemorative service being held on Monday 27 January.
The service, starting at 11am, will be held at the Holocaust Memorial in Havant Cemetery, New Lane, Havant. It will be led by Honorary Alderman Ms Leah Turner and will include a reading by the Mayor of Havant.
Holocaust Memorial Day is recognised internationally to remember the six million Jews that were murdered during the Holocaust, as well as the millions of other people killed from 1933-1945 under the Nazi persecution and in genocides around the world since.
The theme for this year's service is ‘For a better future,’ which will bring people together to commemorate, learn, and take action to create a better future.
Honorary Alderman Ms Leah Turner said “On this Holocaust Memorial Day, we are called to action for a future free from prejudice and persecution. We have the opportunity to work together to help build a world of understanding and respect.
“By commemorating Holocaust Memorial Day, we hope to learn from the past to prevent such atrocities from happening again.”
The Mayor of Havant, Councillor Peter Wade, added: "We must take a stand against all forms of hatred, prejudice, and discrimination.
"I encourage all residents in the borough to join the service. Let us honour the survivors, pay tribute to the millions who lost their lives, and ensure their memories are preserved for future generations."
After the service, guest speaker Mr Peter Kammerling - a 2nd Generation Holocaust survivor - will be at the Plaza telling the story of his late mother and father, both of whom came to this country at different times on the Kindertransport.
