Photography enthusiasts are invited to capture the stunning natural environment of the borough as part of a photographic competition being launched by Havant Borough Council, in collaboration with The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre.
This exciting community initiative invites residents of all ages to capture what climate change and biodiversity mean to them, within the borough's diverse setting.
Raising awareness and marking the adoption of the council’s Climate Change and Biodiversity Strategies, this photo competition calls for keen photographers to share what they see. The winning photographs, chosen and short-listed by a panel of judges, will then be professionally exhibited at The Spring, Havant from 19 March to 16 May 2025.
The competition has five categories for those aged 25 and over, with a special category for the under 25’s:
- Under 25’s vision - a special category to share the perspective of younger residents on our local environment, climate, and the natural world
- Nature and us - showcasing the interplay between people and the environment, nature or weather, celebrating harmony or addressing conflict
- Environmental guardians - highlighting individuals or communities taking steps to protect our local area, from conservation efforts to sustainable practices
- Hidden worlds - capturing the beauty and often unseen miniature world through close-up macro photography
- Changing places - depicting transformations and impacts of climate change in our local landscapes and environments, whether due to human activity, restoration efforts, or natural processes
- Wildlife wonders - showcasing the diversity and richness of local flora, fauna, and fungi, celebrating all species and capturing fascinating behaviours, beauty, or the challenges they face.
Councillor Grainne Rason, Cabinet Lead for Environment and Water Quality, said: “We are lucky to live in an urban borough that is so close to the sea and countryside. This competition is a fantastic opportunity for our community to come together, to celebrate our borough’s incredible natural environment, and reflect on the importance of protecting our unique landscapes and wildlife.
“Capturing the beauty of the borough through the lens of a camera or phone will help us understand what climate change and biodiversity means to you. Every picture tells a story."
Laura Woodward, Creative Director at The Spring, added: “We are delighted to be collaborating with Havant Borough Council on this opportunity to showcase and celebrate our local community.
“Our environment is a playground of inspiration and creatively exploring through the lens of photography can open up exciting ideas to tackle critical topics such as climate change.
“We believe everybody is creative, so we are really looking forward to seeing the wonderful creations and responses from the community.”
Submitted photographs must have been taken within the Borough of Havant but not specifically during the competition timeframe.
