November 2023
High tides and strong winds have impacted the South Hayling coastline. Actions are now being taken to resolve this and help prepare for future stormy weather.
At West Beach, numerous large objects that have been left on the beach by the weather have been removed. Some protective fabric has been exposed from under rocks and will be removed when tidal conditions allow. The storms have also revealed a water pipe beneath the beach. This is being secured and warning signs have been installed.
In Eastoke, the shingle beach has absorbed the main force from storms Babet and Ciaran, doing its job in protecting the people and homes in the locality. The promenade around Eastoke Corner has been cleared of shingle to open up access. In preparation for winter storms, the beach was recently re-profiled to improve the standard of protection over the winter months. Next week our Beach Management Contractor will return to improve the condition of the beach, with an emphasis on Eastoke Corner and Creek Road. We will also be undertaking timber revetment work soon near the Old Coast Guard Cottage.
We are monitoring the coastline to keep it safe and free from hazards. Please take care when visiting the beach, particularly along the shingle where steep ledges have formed. The ledges will reduce over time naturally, and we limit intervention on these as mechanically reducing the ledges can accelerate the erosion of the beach.
